3D Design - New in ANSYS 19
ANSYS 19 includes several enhancements to the core modeling of ANSYS Discovery SpaceClaim, making it easier and faster to model and manipulate parts, assemblies and STL files for additive manufacturing.
The introduction of ANSYS Discovery Live has shown the world that ANSYS continues to pioneer pervasive engineering simulation, by increasing its relevance in the upfront stage of product development. ANSYS 19 expands Discovery Live’s capabilities for solving major physics types by increasing the types of inputs and displays users have at their disposal, and achieving more robust and accurate simulation results.
ANSYS Discovery AIM includes workflow improvements for all major physics studies. These enhancements are designed to speed up time to simulation results, while providing greater and more accurate insight.
Improve the ease of use of modeling in Discovery SpaceClaim
- Configurations and Exploded Views
A new assembly tab in Discovery SpaceClaim adds configurations and enhanced exploded views. These configurations will help you control view states of an assembly and components. Component positions and sizing can also be adjusted as desired in a direct modeling fashion to capture various states of a model. Automatic exploded views include associative hidden lines that clearly illustrate the relationship between components. Both enhancements improve the general visibility and workability of assemblies in Discovery SpaceClaim.
- Local Meshing and New Infill Types
This release includes several new infill types, including several that are surface-only. Choose between hexagonal or triangular openings, and completely remove material from the center of an object for drastic weight reduction. Also included are improvements that facilitate mesh refinement and remove small features in local regions.
- Blending for Concept Modeling
Adding guide curves to create organic shapes is now easier and more robust. You don’t have to ensure guide curves intersect an edge or face — close enough counts. Achieve faster-than-ever shape creation and spend less time modeling to perfect your design.

The introduction of Discovery Live shows the world that ANSYS continues to pioneer pervasive engineering simulation, by increasing its relevance in the upfront stage of product development. The 2017 technology preview unveiled Discovery Live’s capabilities for solving major physics types. The enhanced 19 version greatly expands the types of inputs and displays users have at their disposal.
- Fluid Visualization
Results that were once noisy with too much detail and granularity may now be time averaged for better displays of flow trends and velocity differences. Also, unnecessary visualization near the boundaries of wind tunnel studies are removed so engineers can study fluid effects over the model of interest, rather than near edges/surfaces of the fluid domain.
- Fluid Inputs and Displays
With the addition of a vorticity view, users may better study and understand recirculation zones and eddy currents in flow. When reduced turbulent flow is a goal, this view can illuminate problems areas so you can make necessary design adjustments. Additionally, you can now define heat flux as an input when an input temperature is unknown. With this capability, you’ll derive greater insight earlier in the process and achieve more accurate simulation results in the end.
- Structural Improvements
ANSYS 19 includes additional physics inputs for determining stress and deflection in structural simulations, such as gravity and rotational acceleration. As a result, you can more accurately predict performance through simulating more real-world conditions.
- Thermal Enhancements
You can now decide if certain faces or regions should be exposed to a certain temperature, have a different coefficient of convection, or be insulated from heat transfer. These enhancements allow for greater precision in the definition of environmental characteristics and increased confidence in the accuracy of your results.
Enhancing Discovery AIM
- Shape Visualization While Solving
Discovery AIM includes two enhancements to the recently introduced topology optimization capability. Now, while a solution is converging, results appear and continue updating. You can monitor a shape, halt a solution earlier if necessary, then proceed to validation of the design. A second update adds intelligence to the topology-optimized solution by defining repeating sectors or planar symmetry. This, in turn, produces more realistic, desirable designs in a shorter amount of time.
- Template Improvements
Template improvements for fluid-structure interaction and fluid-solid (conjugate) heat transfer make the initial setup faster and more intuitive. You can now designate multiple materials within a region, reducing simulation setup time.
- Surface Integral Results for Magnetics
ANSYS 19 allows you to view the total magnetic flux and the total current at a surface, rather than just the flux or current density. This provides valuable information when designing products like hall sensors, for example.
